Defining the Core of Leadership

Question: As an individual, what are two major qualities that define you?

Ms. Kamal Cheema: At my core, I see myself as a creator. Creativity shapes how I think, approach challenges, and turn ideas into meaningful solutions that can bring positive change. It allows me to question conventional systems and reimagine new possibilities. Equally important is my commitment to creating impact—making a difference that goes beyond personal success or recognition. I believe true success lies in the positive influence we leave behind, and this belief drives my work, guiding both my vision and the purposeful impact I aim to create through leadership.Top of Form

Life Beyond Work

Question: What is your favorite pastime or hobby?

Ms. Kamal Cheema: My life is quite busy and often revolves around work, projects, and responsibilities, but whenever I find a moment to pause, I truly value spending quality time outdoors or with my family. Being in nature helps me slow down and reconnect with myself after a hectic schedule. Simple activities like taking a walk, visiting a farm, or just enjoying the calmness of open spaces bring me a sense of peace and balance. I also deeply cherish the time I spend with my children and family. Those moments—whether it’s relaxing together, having conversations, or sharing small everyday experiences—are incredibly meaningful to me. They remind me of what truly matters in life and help me maintain a healthy balance between my professional commitments and personal well-being.

Mentors and Role Models

Question: Who has been your mentor both professionally and personally?

Ms. Kamal Cheema: I’ve been fortunate to have many mentors who shaped both my personal values and professional journey. My parents were the earliest and most influential—my father’s unwavering belief in me gave me confidence, while my mother, a gynecologist, taught me discipline, hard work, and compassion. My grandmother’s selflessness instilled in me the importance of charity and giving back. Professionally, I’ve learned from empathetic leaders and even clients, whose guidance and perspectives reinforced humility and the value of continuous learning. Each mentor has shaped my approach to leadership, showing me that growth comes from listening, learning, and staying open to wisdom at every stage.Top of Form

Finding Work-Life Balance

Question: Coming from a career that is work-intensive, what does work-life balance mean to you?

Ms. Kamal Cheema: My pursuit is not wealth but impact. Earlier, balance was easier to maintain, but now my focus is on the quality of time with my family rather than quantity. When I’m home, I ensure our time is meaningful and free from distractions.

Principles of Success

Question: What three things do you attribute your success to?

Ms. Kamal Cheema: First, placing the Creator at the core of my being removes fear and limits. Second, having the right pursuit impact over material gain creates deeper motivation. Third, time management. Time is our most precious asset, and using it wisely gives one an advantage in life.

Cultural Realities and Challenges

Question: What cultural realities have shaped you the most?

Ms. Kamal Cheema: Gender bias is still deeply rooted in our society. Working abroad made me realize how systemic and unconscious this bias can be. When I returned to Pakistan, I resolved to remain authentic and not compromise my identity to fit in. Women must support each other and move from a mindset of scarcity to one of abundance.

Challenges of a Woman CEO

Question: As a woman CEO, what challenges have you faced along the way?

Ms. Kamal Cheema: As a woman CEO, the journey comes with challenges that extend beyond the professional realm. Success is often met with unjustified assumptions, where achievements are attributed to external factors rather than hard work and competence. I’ve learned that the best response is to stay focused, deliver consistent value, and let results speak for themselves. Networking can also be more complicated, as professional interactions are sometimes misinterpreted, making certain spaces less accessible. On top of this, balancing ambition with personal responsibilities, especially motherhood, adds another layer of complexity. Yet, these experiences build resilience, empathy, and a stronger sense of balance, helping women leaders pursue their vision with determination and perspective.

The Birth of My Impact Meter

Question: What inspired you to create My Impact Meter?

Ms. Kamal Cheema: D The inspiration behind creating My Impact Meter came during my MBA in Australia, where I began deeply exploring the concept of social impact and philanthropy. During that time, I realized that while many people genuinely want to give back to society, the system around philanthropy often lacks transparency, structure, and measurable outcomes. Donors frequently contribute with good intentions but have little visibility into how their contributions are actually creating change. This realization made me reflect on the need for a more accountable and technology-driven approach to social good. I envisioned a platform that could bridge this gap—one that would empower donors with clear insights, bring transparency to charitable efforts, and allow individuals and organizations to measure the real impact of their contributions. That vision ultimately led to the creation of My Impact Meter, a platform designed to make giving more meaningful, data-driven, and impactful.

Redefining Charity Through Technology

Question: How has My Impact Meter changed traditional charity practices in Pakistan?

Ms. Kamal Cheema: Technology has the power to transform charity by introducing transparency, trust, and efficiency. Traditionally, donations were often one-time, with little visibility into how they were used. My Impact Meter changes that by allowing donors to track the real impact of their contributions, adopt families, and provide ongoing support for essentials like food, education, and healthcare. This approach moves charity from short-term relief to long-term empowerment, creating a structured and accountable way of giving. By combining technology with social responsibility, My Impact Meter ensures every contribution makes a measurable, lasting difference while building meaningful connections between donors and beneficiaries.

Leadership Lessons from Global Experience

Question: How have your international experiences at Cisco and Graphiant shaped your leadership style?

Ms. Kamal Cheema: Working across diverse cultures taught me adaptability, empathy, and innovation. In startups, you learn to make quick, bold decisions and wear multiple hats. It honed my ability to lead with resilience and creativity.

Advice to the Younger Generation

Question: What advice would you give to today’s youth entering the workforce?

Ms. Kamal Cheema: Don’t quit too quickly. Success requires patience, discipline, and resilience. Passion follows perseverance—not the other way around. Choose your challenges wisely and stay consistent.

Overcoming Failures

Question: Can you share a moment when you felt like a failure and how you overcame it?

Ms. Kamal Cheema: There have been many. I remind myself that nothing in life is permanent. My faith anchors me; prayer and trust in Allah give me the strength to endure and rebuild.

Redefining Power in Leadership

Question: For you, being a CEO, was it about power or sacrifice?

Ms. Kamal Cheema: For me, being a CEO has never been about power; it is fundamentally about responsibility. Every decision you make, every success you achieve, and every failure you face carries weight and consequences, not just for you but for your team, organization, and the people you serve. The role demands immense dedication, resilience, and accountability, and the pressure can be intense. Yet, along with these challenges comes the profound satisfaction of creating something meaningful whether it’s building teams, launching initiatives, or driving positive impact through work that matters. True leadership, in my view, is measured not by authority or titles but by the responsibility you shoulder and the difference you make. Sacrifice is part of the journey, but it is balanced by the fulfillment of seeing vision, effort, and purpose translate into tangible, lasting change.

Ensuring Transparency in Charity Systems

Question: How can Pakistan ensure transparency in the charity ecosystem?

Ms. Kamal Cheema: Technology-driven platforms like My Impact Meter can eradicate inefficiencies and corruption in traditional charity models by ensuring accountability and visibility for all stakeholders.

The Power of Collective Thinking

Question: How can Pakistan’s youth come together for collective change?

Ms. Kamal Cheema: By developing a shared vision. Collective efforts multiply impact—when people with similar goals collaborate, they create lasting change. We must shift from competition to collaboration as a nation.

Technology as a Catalyst for Change

Question: Which technologies can help Pakistan progress?

Ms. Kamal Cheema: Technologies like artificial intelligence (AI), blockchain, the Internet of Things (IoT), and 5G have the potential to fundamentally reshape how we live, work, and interact with the world. These innovations can drive efficiency, transparency, and connectivity across industries, from healthcare and education to agriculture and finance. For Pakistan, embracing these technologies is not just an opportunity, it is a necessity to remain competitive in the rapidly evolving global economy. To fully leverage this potential, Pakistan must create intentional policies and frameworks that integrate these technologies into national development strategies. This includes fostering research and development, supporting startups and entrepreneurs, and ensuring digital literacy among citizens. By proactively adopting AI, blockchain, IoT, and 5G, the country can accelerate progress, enhance productivity, and unlock new avenues for sustainable growth and social impact.

Building a Digital Future

Question: What kind of digital transformation policies does Pakistan need?

Ms. Kamal Cheema: Pakistan needs a comprehensive approach to digital transformation that goes beyond technology adoption to include governance, education, and an innovation-friendly ecosystem. Establishing clear policies around data protection and digitization of records is essential to ensure transparency, security, and efficiency in both public and private sectors. At the same time, curriculum reform is critical to equip the younger generation with the skills needed for a rapidly evolving digital economy, fostering creativity, problem-solving, and tech literacy from an early stage. Equally important is creating an enabling environment where innovation can flourish. The government’s role should be to lay the foundational infrastructure and provide regulatory clarity, then step aside to allow entrepreneurs, businesses, and individuals to drive progress. By combining governance, education, and an open innovation ecosystem, Pakistan can unlock the full potential of digital transformation and position itself for sustainable growth in the global knowledge economy.

A Message for the Youth

Question: Any message for the younger generation?

Ms. Kamal Cheema: My message to the younger generation is simple: keep going, no matter how challenging the journey may seem. Life will always present obstacles and moments of doubt, but perseverance and faith can give you the strength to move forward. When you make the Creator the center of your life, it provides a sense of purpose, clarity, and resilience that helps you navigate both success and setbacks with humility and gratitude. At the same time, learn to value time as your most precious resource. Use it wisely to grow, learn, and contribute to something meaningful. Instead of chasing fame, recognition, or wealth alone, focus on creating impact and making a positive difference in the lives of others. When your intentions are guided by purpose and service, success often follows naturally, and the journey becomes far more fulfilling.

On Legacy and Role Models

Question: What do you think about The Legacy Files initiative?

Ms. Kamal Cheema: It’s a remarkable effort to highlight real role models, those who inspire through innovation, integrity, and impact, not just entertainment. Such platforms can motivate the youth to dream and act beyond limitations.
